Hi! I'm James O'Donohue

I was born in New Zealand, grew up in a small town in Western Australia, then lived in Perth for most of my adult life before relocating to Sydney in 2019.

I've had a passion and a natural talent for all things cameras and media since I was in high school, and once I graduated Year 12 I studied media at TAFE and ended up going on to do a university degree focusing on film / photography as well as journalism and broadcasting.

Doing those courses was a helpful part of my journey, but another massive aspect has been many years of involvement in church media teams. Operating broadcast cameras and shooting photos in a large church environment every weekend for so many years really helped hone my technical skills and develop an eye for what makes a great shot. It was an invaluable training and development platform slowly building me towards a life of doing this professionally. 

A defining moment for me came while I was at uni when the Perth Wildcats NBL team reached out to ask if any students would like to do an internship shooting video content on game-night for them. I've loved sports (especially basketball) my entire life - so I jumped at the opportunity! 

I spent two seasons with the team in 2016 and 2017, and my experience there of working in sports media alongside other content creators and photographers really made me say to myself "This is what I love and want to keep doing!" 

Following that intership, I decided I wanted to dive more specifically into the photography side of things more so than video, and have been honing my craft in it ever since, especially in the basketball space.

I'm now based in Sydney, and coming out of Covid I made the decision to go full-time with my photography business and haven't looked back. I'm best known around Sydney as a dedicated basketball photographer actively covering the game from the domestic level through to NBL1 and the NBL. But I shoot everything and am actively working in 2026 to expand and shoot for clubs and schools across all sports.
